Schoolroom difficultiesThe chore of coaching pupil teachers and conducting evening classes made the day very long for the teacher. The general atmosphere and temperature of the schoolroom with poor ventilation intensified the labour of teaching. Lack of basic home amenities and general poverty meant that the children were often unkempt. Child labour led to poor school attendance and disruption of classes.
Supervision of children extended beyond school hours for at the end of
the day the pupils were escorted home in groups by the pupil teachers.
